The Theater Arts scholars of Bataan High School for the Arts recently concluded their transformative summer learning program in collaboration with Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Head Abbess Venerable Yung Guang was invited to the culminating activity on May 28, 2025 which was held in the Dance Studio of Guang Ming College (GMC)–Manila campus. She encouraged students to “empty” self so as to absorb the most learning. Venerable Yung Guang taught that the value of thankfulness is to appreciate deeds done by others and spread good words of the acts.

In a heartfelt reflection, Artistic Director of Tanghalang Pilipino Tata Nanding shared how the Buddhist principles he encountered—the Three Acts of Goodness: Speak Good Words, Do Good deeds, Think Good Thoughts—beautifully align with Tanghalang Pilipino’s core values of Kabutihan, Katotohanan, at Kagandahan (Goodness, Truth, and Beauty). This intersection of art, spirituality, and nationhood created a powerful learning environment where students not only grew as performers but as mindful and compassionate individuals.

This summer program stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when art, education, and cultural advocacy come together. We hope that the seeds planted during this experience will continue to grow, nurturing artists who carry with them not just skill, but heart, purpose, and a deep love for country and humanity.

This meaningful collaboration was made possible through the shared vision of Ms. Mia Ariana P. Tanciongco, PhD(c), School Director of Bataan High School for the Arts, and Mr. Fernando “Tata Nanding” Josef, Artistic Director of Tanghalang Pilipino. Their commitment to nurturing the next generation of Filipino artists set the stage for a unique cultural and spiritual learning experience.

The workshops were facilitated by Ms. Sarah Monay and Mr. Mark Lorenz Rey, esteemed members of the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors Company. They led the students through the Kamalayang Pilipino Workshop in the Arts (KAPWA)—an advocacy program that uses theater as a tool to awaken national identity, deepen cultural appreciation, and foster social consciousness. Through voice and body work, creative exploration, and reflective discussions, students were encouraged to think critically and express themselves authentically.

Guided as well by their Theater Arts teacher, Ms. Aubrey Savet—an alumna of Guang Ming College and a strong advocate for theater in community development—the students found both challenge and inspiration. Ms. Savet's presence bridged the spiritual discipline of Humanistic Buddhism and the expressive freedom of theater. She has also brought Dr. Tanciongco and Grade 12 students to visit GMC-Tagaytay main campus where they met Venerable Yung Guang visiting too.
