To address the rising emotional stress and mental health challenges of modern life, the Da Tzu II Subchapter of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto Chapter held a Spiritual Care Workshop on July 26 at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto. The event welcomed 30 participants and was led by Monastic Advisor Venerable Ru Sing, with featured speaker Ms. Stephanie Hong, a registered psychotherapist and Fo Guang Shan’s professional spiritual care counselor.

In her opening remarks, Venerable Ru Sing emphasized that spiritual care is both a compassionate practice and an essential tool for emotional well-being. She encouraged attendees to develop greater awareness of their own emotions and to approach others with empathy and understanding, aligning with the core values of Humanistic Buddhism.

Ms. Hong delivered the workshop through a blend of theory, practical examples, and group engagement. She introduced the foundational principles of spiritual care and addressed common trauma scenarios, highlighting the role of deep listening and empathy in offering meaningful support. Participants engaged in hands-on activities, including role-play and group discussions, to explore the dual perspectives of caregiving and being cared for.

A live demonstration with Ms. Hong and Debbie, a member of the temple’s spiritual care team, illustrated how thoughtful communication and presence can positively impact those in need, particularly seniors.
The session also stressed the importance of self-care. Ms. Hong underscored that effective support begins with emotional awareness and personal stability. Through guided exercises, attendees learned to recognize emotional boundaries and apply compassion both outwardly and inwardly.

Venerable Ru Sing thanked Ms. Hong for her clear and compassionate guidance, noting that the workshop offered both insight and practical skills. She encouraged continued participation in future programs to deepen understanding and practice of Humanistic Buddhism.

Attendees shared positive reflections. Annie Du, Da Tzu II Subchapter President, noted that spiritual care is a vital direction for Buddhism in an age of emotional isolation.

Dongmei Chen appreciated learning how to communicate more effectively and set healthy boundaries, while another participant, Miss Chen, praised the integration of Buddhist principles with modern psychology.

The workshop offered not just tools for supporting others, but a reminder to care for oneself—with compassion at the heart of both.
