On October 13, the aftermath of the Cebu earthquake continued to affect countless families, drawing concern from all sectors of society. In response, Fo Guang Shan and BLIA (Buddha’s Light International Association) launched a second wave of disaster relief operations, reaching Bogo and other remote villages to deliver compassion and tangible support where it is most needed.
This relief effort was carried out under the compassionate guidance and clear direction of Ven. Yung Guang, Head Abbot of the Philippines Fo Guang Shan. Upon learning of the disaster, Ven. Yung Guang immediately contacted Head Abbot Ven. Hsin Bao and BLIA Acting President Ven. Tzu Rong to report the situation and provide clear instructions on the direction and strategy of the relief work:
“Disasters are ruthless, but people have love. We are not just delivering goods — we are delivering confidence, warmth, and hope.”
Ven. Yung Guang emphasized that, in the face of disaster, material aid is important, but what matters even more is stabilizing people’s hearts and uniting collective strength. Alongside logistics and resource preparation, the relief effort also carried the spirit of the Dharma and prayers, bringing comfort and reassurance to the affected communities.
On October 8, a disaster relief coordination online meeting was hosted by Ven. Miao Jing, the Abbess of Mabuhay Temple. BLIA Philippines Chapter President Kathy Lin led the fundraising efforts, while BLIA Supervisor Sonny Lee shared relief operation guidelines. Ven. Chueh Lin, inspired the volunteers with her valuable experience, and Ven. Miao Jing offered encouragement and guidance, uniting everyone’s efforts and laying a solid foundation for the second wave of relief.
From October 9 to 12, relief supplies were purchased and delivered to Chu Un Temple, which became the central hub for sorting, packing, and distribution. Under the leadership of BLIA Cebu Chapter President Lynlin Choa and BLIA English Chapter President Jose, volunteers worked tirelessly to organize, pack, and transport goods. Supervisor Sheila coordinated disaster area logistics and truck dispatch; Supervisor Daisy Hong oversaw operations; and Supervisor Erwin Go, though overseas, actively helped arrange for the printing of red banners and stickers through factory support.
The relief operation reached deeply affected remote areas, including Medellin and San Remigio towns, where some areas were accessible by only a single road. Gratitude is extended to Supervisor Sheila for coordinating transportation, President Lynlin Choa and her husband Thompson for working closely with suppliers, and to Erwin for providing banners and stickers. Sincere thanks also go to volunteers Yang Qiu, Treya Yang, Shan Ling, Shan Shan, Zhen Zhen, and Xiao Ye for their enthusiastic fundraising and resource assistance. Xiu Run also lent a truck on short notice, ensuring smooth logistical flow.
A heartfelt appreciation also goes to Chen Ming Qin and her daughter, as well as Wang Ling Hui, who brought friends and family to help pack relief goods. JM, students from the Art Creation Class, Gershon, Gean, and many other volunteers worked hand in hand, making this relief operation a success.
In the early morning of October 13, at 1:00 a.m., another 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Bogo, with aftershocks continuing, further heightening the urgency and importance of relief work. Venerable Yung Guang once again encouraged everyone: “In the face of repeated earthquakes, we must strengthen our faith, act with compassion and determination, and stand by the affected communities—let the light of Fo Guang shine like a beacon in the darkness.”
In total, 1,000 families received relief goods, which included rice, drinking water, bread, biscuits, instant noodles, buckets, dippers, clothing, and other essential items. The distribution covered Barangay Maharuhay in Medellin, San Remigio town, and Barangay Poblacion.
Before the distribution, Ven. Zhi Rong led the disaster victims in reciting Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s “Prayer for Earthquake Relief,” praying for safety, strength, and speedy recovery. The first items distributed were prayer beads and a Blessing Card of Shakyamuni Buddha from Fo Guang Shan Main Shrine in Kaohsiung, symbolizing the protection and blessings of the Buddha.
Ven. Yung Guang reiterated during the action:
“We are not only distributing relief goods; we are sharing comfort and strength. What Fo Guang people bring is warmth to the heart — so that survivors can believe that tomorrow will be better.”
Heartfelt gratitude to all Fo Guang members and kind-hearted donors who supported both on the front lines and behind the scenes. It is through this collective compassion and vow to serve that the great love of Fo Guang shines brightly in the remote town of Bogo, allowing hope to sprout once again on disaster-stricken land.
