Continuing the outreach connection built through last year’s library volunteer program, the Young Adult Division (YAD) of BLIA Toronto Chapter visited Westminster Court Retirement Home on October 11 to co-host the “Mid-Autumn Reunion — Sending Blessings” celebration.

The event featured nostalgic English and Chinese songs, a magic show, musical performances, a video introduction to the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, and a lively raffle. Nearly 50 participants, including Buddha’s Light members, youth volunteers, residents, and their families—ranging from children to a 92-year-old elder—shared a joyful afternoon filled with tea, laughter, and festive spirit.

Before the program, the youth recited the Heart Sutra, creating a touching interfaith moment alongside the cross displayed in the lounge—a symbol of harmony and mutual respect. Volunteers also prepared vegetarian lunch boxes in advance, with Juda Chua waking up at 4:30 a.m. to hand-roll sushi. “This is my own vegetarian sushi recipe—you can’t find it anywhere else,” he said, as residents delighted in the homemade flavors.

To bridge language and cultural differences, the youth wrote their spoken languages—English, Mandarin, or Cantonese—on name tags to make communication easier. Seniors joined in cheerful songs performed by the youth, enjoying tea, fruit, and riddles served with warmth and smiles.

First-time volunteer Kiana Wong performed a lively magic show, filling the room with laughter. “Every senior has a story, but in this moment, we connect beyond age and experience,” she shared.

Event coordinator Yifei Wang praised the youth’s creativity and teamwork, expressing hope that their compassionate energy will continue to bring light and joy to the community.
