Fo Guang Shan Temple Year-End Community Clean-Up Unites Volunteers in Joyful Service

In preparation for the Lunar New Year, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto held its Year-End Community Cleanup Day on the afternoon of January 11. Twenty-three Buddha’s Light International Association Toronto subchapters, together with more than 260 volunteers, came together to carry out comprehensive cleaning and organization throughout the temple. This collective effort refreshed the environment while strengthening community bonds and goodwill.

Before the cleanup began, participants gathered in the Main Shrine. Led by Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan, the assembly reverently recited the Heart Sutra and A Prayer for the People Who Listen to the Dharma, written by the Founder of Fo Guang Shan, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The Abbess shared that community service is both an offering of care and a form of spiritual cultivation—serving with sincerity to create a serene and dignified environment for all who visit the temple.

Following the opening, Superintendent Venerable Ru Zhong outlined work assignments. Volunteers then proceeded to their designated areas, covering the Main Shrine and Buddha statues, Memorial Hall, dining hall, classrooms, teahouse, meditation hall, conference room, library, cultural museum, bookstore, and other shared facilities. With clear coordination and mutual support, teams worked attentively and joyfully throughout the day.

Despite winter conditions, volunteers stationed at the main entrance remained mindful of safety and demonstrated strong teamwork. Youth members joined volunteers of all ages, with three generations collaborating harmoniously—renewing both the temple space and the spirit of the Buddha’s Light family.

To conclude the day, the temple prepared refreshments, including snacks, red bean soup, and freshly steamed buns, offering warmth and heartfelt appreciation for the volunteers’ dedication.
