Fo Guang Shan Hsi Fang Temple
February 25, 2026

On February 14, 2026, Valentine’s Day coincided with class day for the Three Acts of Goodness Children’s Dharma Class at Fo Guang Shan Hsi Fang Temple. Seizing this meaningful occasion, teachers centered the lesson on “gratitude,” guiding students to practice the Three Acts of Goodness—doing good deeds, speaking good words, and thinking good thoughts—and the Four Givings—giving others confidence, joy, hope, and convenience. The classroom was filled with warmth and positive energy.

Instructor Ms. Christina Liu, who also teaches in a U.S. public elementary school, explained that Valentine’s Day is widely celebrated on American campuses, where students exchange cards and small gifts, and parents often show appreciation to teachers. In countries such as Finland, the day is known as “Friends’ Day,” highlighting care and appreciation for everyone, not just romantic partners. Drawing on this broader meaning of love, teachers designed interactive activities to help children express gratitude in daily life.

Students shared their school crafts and learned about cultural perspectives on Valentine’s Day. Through a themed treasure hunt led by teachers and Young Adults, they cultivated focus and mindfulness. A multimedia session featuring How to Be a Good Friend encouraged reflection on kindness, cooperation, and attentive listening. After the video, students eagerly shared their insights, reinforcing the values of right action, right speech, and right view.

In line with Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s advocacy of environmental and spiritual protection, teachers repurposed calligraphy spring couplets from previous years into heart-shaped cards. Students wrote New Year blessings or created drawings before personally presenting the cards to the monastics, putting the spirit of “giving joy” into action.

With Lunar New Year festivities ongoing, auspicious horse plush toys were also distributed to students and volunteers, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Through festive learning, the children joyfully practiced gratitude and kindness in both temple and daily life.
