“Three Acts of Goodness” succulents are making their way into local classrooms.

In March, the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Los Angeles Chapter visited eight elementary schools in the Walnut Valley Unified School District (WVUSD), distributing nearly 800 potted succulents to students. Each plant carried a colorful sticker with one of the “Three Acts of Goodness” messages—“Do Good Deeds,” “Speak Good Words,” or “Think Good Thoughts.” The small green plants, both lively and playful in design, aimed to promote environmental awareness while sharing the values of the “Three Acts of Goodness” movement advocated by Fo Guang Shan, allowing seeds of kindness to take root in young hearts.

The outreach took place on March 2, 4, 9, and 16 at eight schools across the district: Castle Rock, C.J. Morris, Collegewood, Evergreen, Quail Summit, Vejar, Walnut, and Westhoff elementary schools.

On March 9, BLIA Los Angeles Chapter President President Echo Tsai, Vice President Avelyn Busch, and Venerable Hui Ze of Hsi Lai Temple first visited Castle Rock Elementary School. Principal Dr. Elizabeth Chang expressed appreciation for the succulents, noting that they symbolize resilience and vitality while also reflecting the connection between people and the land.

First-grade students reacted with delight upon seeing the different varieties of succulents, exclaiming “Wow!” as they curiously reached out to touch them. “It’s a little prickly!” one child remarked. Each pot featured one of nine playful “Three Acts of Goodness” sticker designs—featuring rabbits, grapes, lemons, forests, teddy bears, and other cheerful images—which encouraged students to choose their favorites.

“You picked the same one as me!” the children excitedly told one another, chatting animatedly as parents nearby captured the moment on their phones.

The group later visited Westhoff Elementary School, where Principal Dr. Rosa Northcott personally welcomed them. Venerable Hui Ze introduced the meaning behind the “Three Acts of Goodness,” explaining that the plants were given to encourage students to appreciate environmental protection while caring for living things. The principal expressed strong support for the initiative and suggested taking a group photo, which she later shared on the school’s social media account to show appreciation for the program.

BLIA Los Angeles Chapter President Echo Tsai also shared a lighthearted moment from the event. Nicole, the first-grade daughter of Walnut Subchapter members Tang Li and Chen Xiao, attends Vejar Elementary School. When she saw her parents walk into her classroom on March 2 to deliver succulents to her and her classmates, she was both delighted and surprised.
