Vietnamese Monastics and Lay Followers Visit Xiangyun Temple in Austin to Exchange Insights on Localizing Buddhist Communities
By Ben Shan, Merit Times Correspondent | Austin
On the morning of April 6, five Vietnamese bhikkhunis from the Magnolia Grove Meditation Center in Memphis, Mississippi, visited Xiangyun Temple in Austin, accompanied by twelve lay Dharma protectors from Linh Son Temple. Magnolia Grove was founded in 2005 by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and primarily serves English-speaking practitioners. Linh Son Temple is the largest Vietnamese temple in Austin and maintains close interactions with Xiangyun Temple. Many members of the visiting group were youth leaders, representing a youth community of approximately 100 members.
The group of 17 first entered the main shrine hall to pay respects to the Buddha. Venerable Hoc Nghiem led the chanting and prayers in English. Venerable Jue Ji introduced the resident monastic and lay community, as well as the temple facilities, and presented gifts including calligraphy calendars by the Venerable Master, Dharma quote cards, and souvenirs from the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum.
The group then moved to the Tea room for fellowship and discussion, where they shared experiences in Dharma propagation and community engagement over tea. What was originally scheduled as a one-hour visit extended to an hour and a half, with participants reluctant to part ways.
This visit further deepened Dharma friendship and demonstrated the harmonious integration and successful localization of Buddhist practice.
