I.B.P.S. Austin
February 4, 2025
On Tuesday January 28th, three sixth grade students and their teacher from Austin Jewish Academy came to visit Xiang Yun Temple to learn more about Buddhism. The students take a class on ancient history and were particularly interested in learning about the Buddhist connection between Indian and Chinese civilization.
When they first arrived at the temple, they were greeted by their host and regular temple volunteer, Landry Scott Harmon. To start their visit, he brought the students and teacher to the Meditation Hall to learn more about Buddhist mindfulness. After introducing the concept and some light stretching, Landry guided them in how to practice meditation by showing different methods such as standing, walking, and sitting. He emphasized that we can be mindful in every moment of life by bringing our awareness to our present activity.
After some reflection and questions from the students about their meditation experience, Landry brought them to the Tea Room to partake in Xiang Yun Temple’s regular Tea and Peace. The students mentioned it was their first time trying tea prepared in the traditional Chinese way. They were surprised that the fragrant and sweet red tea had no sugar in it! After making vows in the Three Acts of Goodness, the group, guided by Venerable Jue Ji, discussed that day’s passage in Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s 365 Days for Travelers.
Venerable brought up the role of a vegetarian diet in Buddhist practice. The school teacher mentioned similarities in the Jewish and Buddhist approach to compassion. Following the tea service, the group was brought to enjoy a vegetarian lunch in the dining hall.
After lunch, the group was guided around the temple grounds as Landry explained various Buddhist symbols, objects, and imagery they encountered. Landry emphasized several connections and evolutions of Buddhism as it made its way into China from India. The students also got to spin the wheel to receive a pair of lucky Dharma words from Ven Master Hsing Yun for the Lunar New Year. At the end, they got to watch the animated movie depicting the life of the Buddha followed by the discussion.
Then the students got more hands on by having the opportunity to write the Four Givings in Chinese characters. They got to draw and make a lantern for Lunar New Year as a keepsake. Following that, the students had an opportunity to ask Venerable Jue Ji what questions they have. After group photos and gifts given by the temple, the students returned back to school with many first time experiences.
