Bacolod City and Fo Guang Shan Celebrate Lunar New Year: A Grand Festivity of Art and Culture

On Lunar New Year's Eve 2025, Fo Guang Shan Yuan Thong Temple in the Philippines, in collaboration with the Bacolod Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, hosted a grand celebration to welcome the new year. Bacolod City Mayor Albee Benitez led the city government team, including Councilor Jason Vilarosa and Councilor Pao Sy, in attending the festivities, bringing joy and vibrant energy to the celebration.

Art Exhibition Opening: 41 Artists Unite in Celebration

The event officially began at 6 PM with the highly anticipated art exhibition opening. A total of 41 artists participated in the exhibition, showcasing creative works that expressed profound cultural and educational themes. Renowned local artists Revo Yanson and Ryn Paul Gonzales delivered speeches on behalf of the participating artists, expressing gratitude to Fo Guang Shan for providing a platform where art could convey positive energy in diverse forms.

Yanson remarked, "Art is the language of culture and a bridge for mutual understanding." Gonzales added, "We are grateful to all participants for making this exhibition a magnificent cultural feast."

Venerable Zhi Rong, the abbot of Fo Guang Shan Yuan Thong Temple, also expressed appreciation to the artists and guests, stating, "Art is not just an expression of culture but also a form of education. Through art, we can share hope and beauty with the world." The ribbon-cutting ceremony was then led by Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Association representative Cora, officially inaugurating the exhibition.\

A Festive Evening of Music and Dance

At 7 PM, the celebration continued with a mesmerizing string performance featuring classic songs such as Gong Xi Fa Cai, Peng You (Friend), and The Moon Represents My Heart, bringing heartfelt New Year wishes through music. At 7:20 PM, Venerable Zhi Rong delivered a welcoming message, followed by a spectacular dragon dance that energized the audience.

Chinese Zodiac and Blessing Ceremony

At 7:28 PM, guest speaker Bobby Cordova shared insights on the cultural significance of the Year of the Snake, offering heartfelt blessings for a prosperous and peaceful new year. This was followed by a captivating performance by the Sanhao Performing Arts group, presenting a creative and educational program inspired by the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. The performance concluded with the uplifting song Xiang Qian You Lu (The Road Ahead), signifying hope and progress.

Lion Dance and New Year’s Prayers

At 8:30 PM, a thrilling lion dance brought the festive atmosphere to new heights. At 9 PM, a collective prayer was held, uniting all attendees in hope and gratitude for the coming year.

The grand finale took place at 10 PM with a New Year’s Eve bell-ringing ceremony. Mayor Albee Benitez led the first strike of the bell, symbolizing blessings for Bacolod City. He then shared his New Year wishes:

1.To transform Bacolod into a supercity.

2.To help every Bacolodnon overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.

3.To protect Bacolod from calamities.

This Lunar New Year celebration seamlessly integrated art, culture, and spirituality, showcasing Bacolod City’s rich diversity while strengthening the bond between tradition and the local community. Through the dedicated efforts of Fo Guang Shan, the event brought people together in unity and joy, welcoming the new year with hope and positivity.
