【本報綜合外電報導】有觀光潛水器意外發現極其罕見的巨型幻影水母（Stygiomedusa gigantea），讓科學家興奮不已。

這個發現日前刊登在《極地研究》（Polar Research）期刊，乘客回報說，他們在南極洲海域看到一種看起來像飛碟的深海生物，牠們垂下厚厚的絲帶，科學家一看到照片，立刻認出這是巨型幻影水母，研究人員估計水母的長度超過五公尺，其中一隻甚至觸手延伸達十公尺。由於這些神祕生物通常在一千公尺深的海中活動，人類幾乎看不到牠們，這次觀光潛水船在僅八十至二百八十公尺深的海域中發現。

目前尚不清楚為什麼牠們會在南極洲周圍相對較淺的水域閒逛，科學家指出，一種可能的解釋是水母游得更高，使自己暴露在紫外線輻射下，以擺脫寄生蟲；另一個假設是，南極大陸上升流把牠們帶上去了。
