日本水墨畫，是在十二世紀與禪宗一起傳入日本。禪宗僧人傳播了這門藝術，最初是創始人的達磨畫，隨著時間的推移，山水畫和文人畫也蓬勃發展。「蘭、竹、菊、梅」四君子的繪畫技法流傳至今，青柳玲子也將該技法應用在作品中。到了十九世紀，西方繪畫更與水墨相結合，在日本繪畫開花結果。

八百年來，墨與水的藝術傳入日本，克服了政治曲折並逐漸本土化。在今天這個混亂的世界，相信水墨畫就像禪的精神一樣，一定會深遠流傳下去。
