【本報綜合外電報導】天文學家正在宇宙其餘地方尋找生命跡象，而系外行星K2-18b特別受到關注。NASA指出，韋伯太空望遠鏡可能已在K2-18b大氣中偵測到含碳分子，而在地球，分子只能由生命產生。歐洲新聞台（Euronews）旗下網站Euronews Next報導，自天文學家2019年宣布在K2-18b行星大氣中發現水汽跡象後，K2-18b行星一直是受到廣泛研究的對象。後續探討相同數據的研究顯示，K2-18b行星大氣中的水汽實際上可能是甲烷。K2-18b行星在獅子座繞著一顆紅矮星運行，距離我們的太陽系約120光年，質量是地球的8.6倍。現在，美國國家航空暨太空總署（NASA）的韋伯太空望遠鏡（James Webb Space Telescope）將更強大的鏡頭對準K2-18b，提供大量的新數據，發現K2-18b行星上有含碳分子，包括甲烷與二氧化碳，這引發了人們對K2-18b特徵的揣測，認為這顆星球的大氣可能富含氫氣，且表面被液態海洋覆蓋，而這些特徵可能是一顆行星有生命存在的跡象。
