《大唐西域記》：「風壤既別，地利亦殊，花草果木，雜種異名。所謂庵沒羅果、庵弭羅果、末杜迦果、跋達羅果、劫比他果……凡厥此類難以備載，見珍人世者，略舉言焉。」其中「劫比他果」指的就是象橘，亦稱迦毘陀、迦卑他、劫比陀、柯必他等；原產地為印度、斯里蘭卡，佛陀紀念館佛教植物園區則種植在玄奘大師區。

象橘俗稱「木蘋果」，亦稱三葉木桔，或暹羅無花果；為芸香科植物種，屬喬木，高可達20公尺，小莖多刺，樹皮灰白色，斜向上生，奇數羽狀複葉，小葉對生全緣，葉軸有翼，單性花，雌雄同株呈黃綠色，圓錐花序，果圓球形，大小如橙子，果皮硬殼質；種子甚多，有棉質毛，可作嫁接柑橘屬植物的砧木。象橘因葉、根及莖皮含香豆素，亦稱黃香楝、硬皮橘及孟加拉蘋果。

為何名為象橘？原來它外表粗糙又硬如象皮一樣，不怎麼討喜，卻有著藥用的功效，果期於10月，果實為漿果，近似球形，徑5~9公分，成熟時呈灰褐色。象橘可種植於陽光明媚的草地上，因為具有充足的光線，為亞熱帶水果，果肉味酸甜，可食用與藥用，多作為果醬，但果皮木質粗糙，堅硬到要用槌子敲開。

佛教的傳統醫學阿育吠陀，則以象橘的樹皮、葉子、花、果實做藥，象橘樹幹可以磨成黃香楝粉，是一種淡黃色的皮膚保養品，也可以作為防蚊之用。
