消災延壽藥師佛為佛教東方淨琉璃世界教主，在因地修菩薩道時，曾發十二大願，願除眾生病苦，令眾生身心安樂。漢傳佛教一般藥師佛造像，左手執持藥器（又稱摩尼寶珠），右手結三界印；藏傳佛教則左手持缽盛滿甘露，右手持訶梨勒果。

佛教經典《金光明最勝王經》云：「訶梨勒一種，具足有六味，能除一切病，無忌藥中王」。梵文Haritaki是表示「帶走所有的疾病」。藥師佛對眾生應病允藥，而以此施予治療。

「訶梨勒」被公認為是最重要的阿育吠陀藥草，在西藏被列為藏藥之首，是印度國寶級的「藥草之王」，其根部、莖葉、樹皮皆可入藥，廣泛被使用，有「健康之樹」或「生命之樹」的意涵。

藥草之王「訶梨勒」，又名訶子、隨風子，原產於印度、東南亞等地，是藥用植物，亦有除穢安神，香氣化溼作用；此果為藥，功用之多，無所不入。鑑真和尚於東渡時亦將其傳入日本，是辟邪珍貴草藥。

訶子植物特性屬落葉喬木，葉片呈橢圓形，穗狀花序腋生或頂生，花萼杯狀屬淡黃綠色；有2顆胚珠，長橢圓形。核果堅硬，成熟時變黑褐色，有5條鈍稜，富含單寧，種子橄欖形，果期在7月至9月。
